Where WebP still is not accepted
Browsers settled the WebP question years ago, but the rest of the software world has been slower. If you have landed here, it is probably because one of these said no:
- Word, PowerPoint and older office suites when inserting a picture
- Photoshop before 2022, and many older or lightweight photo editors
- Print shops, photo labs and passport or ID photo uploads
- Marketplace, job board and government upload forms that allow JPG only
- Digital photo frames, TVs and car infotainment systems
JPEG is the lowest common denominator of image formats — thirty years old and readable by essentially everything. Converting costs you a small amount of file size and removes the argument entirely.
JPG or PNG for the converted file?
Choose JPG for photographs: it is far smaller and the compression suits continuous tones. Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background you need to keep, or when it is a logo, screenshot or anything with sharp text and flat colour, which JPEG renders with faint edge artefacts.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I convert WebP back to JPG?
Usually because something refuses to open it. Images saved from the web arrive as WebP, and plenty of software still rejects the format: older Photoshop and Office versions, many print shops and photo labs, some CMS and marketplace upload forms, TV and car media players, and older email clients that will not preview the attachment.
Are my WebP files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes the WebP and re-encodes it as JPEG with a WebAssembly build of MozJPEG, entirely on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
What happens if the WebP has a transparent background?
Transparent areas come out white. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparency must be flattened onto a colour, and white is the safest default for documents and most page backgrounds. Convert to PNG instead if you need the transparency kept.
Does the conversion lose quality?
Slightly, since a lossy WebP is being re-encoded into another lossy format. At quality 85 or above the difference is not visible in normal viewing. If you have a choice, convert from the highest-quality source you have rather than from an already-reduced copy.
Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?
Usually a little, yes — WebP compresses roughly 25–35% more efficiently than JPEG at the same quality. You are deliberately trading some file size for compatibility with software that cannot read WebP.
Why do images I save from websites come out as .webp?
Most modern sites serve WebP to browsers that support it, so your browser downloads exactly what was served. Nothing is wrong with the file — it is just a newer format than some of the tools on your computer expect.
